What is Prenatal Physical Therapy?
Prenatal physical therapy is the treatment and prevention of any pelvic floor or core dysfunction or pain which includes the abdomen, pelvis, lower back, and hips that occurs during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin is released which causes the ligaments to stretch in the lower back, abdomen, and pelvis. With a growing belly, this places more stress on the back and pelvic floor. If there were any imbalances prior to the pregnancy, usually they are more pronounced during your pregnancy. The more you can keep your back, abdomen and pelvic floor balanced during your pregnancy, the better you will feel, and generally, the better your labor and recovery will be.
Due to the location of the pelvic floor, it is unique as most of the structures are internal and sometimes this requires an internal assessment and treatment (up to 24 weeks pregnant) which only a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist can provide.
