What is Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Urinary or fecal incontinence, bed-wetting, and constipation are very traumatic conditions for children to experience and will continue to go on untreated. These can lead to issues at home, at school, and with friends and family members. I myself started leaking when I was 7 and ended up causing me about 30 years of pelvic floor and core dysfunction. Looking back, I so wish I had the help I needed back then and could have saved so much shame and time.

Appointments look quite a bit different with kids as we do not do any internal assessments and exercises look more like play.

FAQ for Kids Treatment

No. We do not do any internal assessment or treatment for kids.  We will have the parent/guardian fill out an intake form on their history and symptoms, do an external assessment of their breathing, ribcage, pelvis and hips and will palpate externally the pelvic floor muscles.  In some cases, a visual assessment of the pelvic floor might be necessary with consent.

Depending on what their symptoms are and how long they have been going on will dictate how many appointments are necessary but usually 6-8 visits are common.

Again this will depend on their symptoms but a common frequency is 1x week for 2 weeks, then 2x month for 1-2 months and then 1x month for 2-3 months.

No, we do not bill insurance directly but we are “out of network” with all insurance plans and accept cash/card/HSA/FSA payment at the time of service.  We believe in the quality of care and spend an hour with you or your kid at each appointment with lower cost appointments and have decided this is more important than being in-network with insurances. Upon your request, we will give you a superbill which is a receipt you can send into your insurance company to get reimbursed for your out of network benefits.  For most insurance plans, this is somewhere around 60-80% reimbursement.
It will again depend on their symptoms but usually filling out a bladder or bowel diary, some pelvic floor and core exercises, diet modifications and helping to create long lasting good bowel and bladder habits.
Under Washington law, you can see any Physical Therapist under direct access so no you do not need a referral!  However, if you see your pediatrician, urologist or GI specialist and they give one to you, please bring that in.
